The complete Lac du Salagou tour

Depart directly from our campsite for a 28 km loop around the lake. Allow 7 to 8 hours’ walking. The itinerary follows marked trails accessible to regular walkers. It’s also possible to do the loop in two days or by mountain bike.

Landscapes: this grand tour offers total immersion in the diversity of the Salagou landscapes:

The Vailhés loop

This family-friendly loop starts 14 kilometers from our campsite. The 6 km circuit is easy, with no major difficulties. Allow about 2 hours for the walk.

Landscapes: you’ll skirt the shoreline before climbing gently into the ruffe hills, typical of the region. The contrast between the red of the earth and the blue of the lake is striking.

  • Beaches within walking distance for a relaxing break
  • Views of the lake at various points along the route
  • Shady areas perfect for picnics
  • Local fauna: birds, dragonflies, small reptiles

Our verdict: a perfect walk for families or for first-time visitors to Salagou. The trail is easy and varied, and the viewpoints are effortlessly accessible. Ideal for a relaxing outing with a swim, picnic and nature observation.

Randonné Au Mont Liausson

Mount Liausson

This hike starts about 3 km from our campsite, from the small village of Liausson (accessible by car or bike). The round trip to the summit totals 7 km, with an ascent of around 400 meters. Allow between 2 hrs 30 and 3 hrs for the walk, with some steep but not technically demanding sections.

Landscapes: you climb through typically Mediterranean vegetation, with pine trees, garrigue and the scent of thyme. As you ascend, the view becomes increasingly clear, until you reach the summit at 535 meters above sea level.

  • 360° view of Lac du Salagou, the cirque de Mourèze and the Cévennes mountains
  • Orientation table at the summit to help you locate the relief
  • Traces of an ancient oppidum (fortified Gallic village)
  • A superb spot for sunrise or sunset

Our verdict: one of our favorites! The effort of the climb is amply rewarded by the lovely panorama. Perfect for lovers of beautiful views and wild nature. Remember to go early in the morning or late in the day for the magical light.

The Cirque de Mourèze and the Grézac plateau

Just a 15-minute drive from the campsite, the Cirque de Mourèze offers several hiking itineraries, from 5 to 10 km, depending on the chosen loop. Allow 2 to 3 hours’ walking, depending on your pace and the route you choose.

Landscapes: this listed site is distinguished by its chaotic landscape of dolomitic rock, a veritable natural labyrinth. The climb up to the Grézac plateau offers a panoramic view of the region, between karstic relief and the Salagou river below.

  • The rocky cirque, nicknamed “Languedoc’s little Colorado”.
  • The Grézac lookout with its lovely view of the lake

Octon – Château de Lauzières – Salelles

This 9 km loop, with little difference in altitude, starts from the village ofOcton, just 10 minutes from our campsite. Allow around 2h30 for the walk, on easy to moderate paths. The itinerary can be done in either direction and is pleasant all year round.

Landscapes: the route alternates between vineyards, red earth, groves of holm oaks and open stretches with views over the hills. At times, you’ll run alongside small streams and through agricultural areas typical of the Hérault region.

Points of interest

  • The village of Octon, colorful and lively in season
  • The ruins of Château de Lauzières, perched high above the valley
  • The hamlet of Salelles, a peaceful corner of rural charm
  • Beautiful view of the lake at the end of the route, on the way back to Octon

Our verdict: a pleasant, peaceful loop through nature, heritage and authenticity. Ideal for those looking for an easy hike with a rich local atmosphere. Special mention for the castle ruins and the views at the end of the route.
