Discovering Béziers

Nestled between the Mediterranean and the Languedoc hinterland, Béziers is a city of authentic charm, rich heritage and the gentle southern lifestyle. Known for its famous Féria, its vineyards as far as the eye can see and the famous Fonseranes locks, the town offers a wealth of experiences to share with family and friends. Just 30 minutes from the Hérault campsite, Béziers is a must for discovering Occitan culture, tasting local produce and enjoying the region’s sunny climate.

Béziers, a must-see destination in Hérault

Béziers, often referred to as the “city of nine locks”, is a delight for history and culture enthusiasts. The city boasts a rich architectural heritage. Not to be missed is the Gothic cathedral, whose silhouette can be seen from afar.

Most of the town’s monuments are concentrated in Vieux-Béziers, a historic center protected for centuries by high ramparts. Culture, férias and wine are also the pride of this large town in the Hérault region. The same is true of many of the major sites not far from the beaches, including 19th-century town houses, medieval alleyways, the Pont-Vieux, the late 19th-century arena, the Halles Baltard, the remains of a theater dating back to Roman times and the pont-canal…

Also worth a visit are the famous nine locks at Fonseranes, now a Unesco World Heritage site. They are one of the most visited sites in the Languedoc region, alongside the Pont du Gard and the medieval city of Carcassonne.

  • The historic center of Béziers is the place to be when you visit the city. As you stroll through the shopping streets of the old quarter, you’ll have the chance to discover the many gems that make up the city’s rich architectural heritage, including the cathedral and the bishops’ garden;
  • Take time to discover and appreciate the cathedral of Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse. As you climb to the top of the central bell tower, you’ll enjoy a fascinatingly beautiful view of the town, the Orb river and the Canal du Midi.
  • Many holidaymakers also take time out to admire the boats passing through the nine locks at Fonseranes, or to stroll along the canal;
  • The “plateau des poètes” is also well worth a visit. The green lung of Béziers, this 5-hectare 19th-century garden, located between the municipal theater and the train station, is a popular place to relax and stroll for locals and visitors alike;
  • The Allées Paul-Riquet flower market is another of Béziers’ must-sees. Located opposite the town’s theater, it welcomes the public in a warm atmosphere every Friday;
  • The old cemetery, so often compared to the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris and known for its mausoleums and cypress-lined alleys, is also one of the town’s most popular places to stroll. People like to spend time here because of its calm setting and exceptional views of the mountains and the Notre-Dame-du-Moucadou statue.
  • If you’re visiting Béziers in August, you’ll have the chance to take part in the town’s féria. Bodegas, casitas, shows and flamenco are just some of the events that punctuate this event, which resounds throughout the Hérault department every year;
  • The Béziers bullring traces the city’s history, particularly its Roman roots…

Between two visits to Béziers, treat yourself to a relaxing break at the campsite, where nature meets comfort. The perfect place to extend your discovery of the Hérault region under the southern sun.
