Lac du Salagou: a legacy of millions of years
Have you ever wondered where those distinctive red rocks around Lac du Salagou come from? It’s the result ofan impressive geological history spanning millions of years! The lake is nestled in the heart of a depression formed by erosion and tectonics. The famous red ruffes, the sedimentary rocks that give the landscape its distinctive hue, are clays and sandstones rich in iron oxide. They bear witness to a distant past, when the climate was very different. It’s an open-air geological spectacle!
Lac du Salagou is located in the Hérault department, in the Occitanie region, about 50 km west of Montpellier. Its proximity to towns such as Clermont-l’Hérault (approx. 8 km) and Lodève (approx. 20 km) makes it very accessible. The lake itself covers an area of around 750 hectares. It’s a man-made lake, created by the construction of a dam in the 1960s, but one that has blended in perfectly with its surroundings.
